An exploration of F.Scott Fitzgerald’s contradictory references to the American Dream in his Jazz era work The Great Gatsby which possibly represents both the corrupted and the initial uncorrupted American Dream - in addition to analyzing the possible sustainability of the American Dream through consumerism and the use of mass marketing. In depth character analyses are used to demonstrate Fitzgerald’s theories as they relate to amassing wealth as a means to social success. This work also evaluates the critique of popular culture as it relates to the American life that Fitzgerald confronts as well as the Marxist point of view that people become alienated by economic processes.Razmatranje F.
